The assertion that the San Jose Fire Department pays $125,00 as a starting wage after a cadet’s graduation from the fire academy is not correct.
According to the San Jose website as of May 2025, the starting salary for a firefighter fresh out of the academy is $54.90 an hour or $114,192 a year.
However, the pay rate for a rookie firefighter may increase depending on the qualifications they bring with them to the department. For example, if the newly-hired crew member is bilingual, already has paramedic training or qualifies for an education incentive then their base pay may be higher than a new firefighter without those skills.
San Jose Fire Department employees are also eligible for other city employment benefits, including health and life insurance, vacation, education and retirement benefits.
