Fact Brief: Do San Jose Fire Department salaries start at $125K a year?

Yes.

The assertion that the San Jose Fire Department pays $125,000 as a starting approximate minimum wage for a firefighter with the department is true.

According to the San Jose documents dated to August 2026, the starting salary for a firefighter is a minimum of $60.29 an hour or $125,396.70 a year. 

However, the pay rate for a firefighter may increase depending on the  qualifications they bring with them to the department. For example, if the newly-hired crew member is bilingual, already has paramedic training or qualifies for an education incentive then their base pay may be higher than a new firefighter without those skills. 

San Jose Fire Department employees are also eligible for other city employment benefits, including health and life insurance, vacation, education and retirement benefits.
