San José Spotlight among top independent newsrooms nationwide

San José Spotlight has been recognized as one of only 11 independent news organizations nationwide to reach the highest level of business sustainability under a new assessment by Local Independent Online News (LION) Publishers, whose mission is to strengthen the local news industry by helping independent news publishers build more sustainable businesses.

The distinction places San José Spotlight in LION’s newly created “Sustaining” stage, which recognizes news organizations that have developed the financial strength, operational infrastructure and journalistic impact needed to navigate challenges and continue serving their communities over the long term.

LION announced the new designation after analyzing data from its recent Sustainability Audit, a comprehensive assessment designed to measure the health and resilience of independent news businesses.

“We looked at more than 400 organizations over the past 18 months, and a relative handful reached the ‘Sustaining’ category — the highest and best score a publisher can receive on a LION Audit,” Chris Krewson, executive director of LION Publishers, said. “It’s no small feat and is a testament to San José Spotlight putting in the work, over years, to focus not just on the important work of producing impactful journalism, but a dedication to improving the organization’s operational resilience as well as its financial health. They’re one of fewer than a dozen newsrooms in the U.S. to reach this goal, and San Jose is lucky to have them.”

San José Spotlight is recognized alongside other nonprofit newsrooms: Bridge Michigan, Cardinal News, Connecticut Mirror, Fort Worth Report, Technical.ly, The Baltimore Banner, The Daily Memphian, The Nevada Independent, The Salt Lake Tribune and VTDigger.

The recognition comes at a critical moment for local journalism. Newsrooms across the country continue to face shrinking advertising revenue, rising operating costs, rapid technological change and the disappearance of traditional local news outlets. Against that backdrop, nonprofit and independent publishers are building new models to ensure communities continue to have access to reliable, deeply reported local news.

LION’s Sustainability Audit looks beyond traditional measures such as revenue, audience size and staffing. It also examines the systems and strategies that enable a news organization to endure, including financial planning, revenue diversification, operational processes, leadership development, audience engagement and the ability to adapt to changing community needs.

According to LION, organizations in the Sustaining stage have built the foundational and mission-critical infrastructure necessary to capitalize on new opportunities, maintain operations during leadership transitions and withstand challenges affecting multiple areas of the business at once. They are also positioned to adjust their products and audience strategies as the regulatory, cultural and technological landscape changes.

For San José Spotlight, the recognition affirms years of work to build a durable, community-supported nonprofit newsroom in Silicon Valley. Since its launch in 2019, San José Spotlight has remained committed to fearless journalism that holds power to account, uplifts marginalized voices and equips residents with the information they need to participate in civic life.
