In its first live community engagement event in Cupertino, San José Spotlight hosted a robust policy discussion around development in the city—including the outlook for commercial, retail and housing growth.

The panel, held this month in partnership with the city, featured Community Development Director Benjamin Fu and Economic Development Manager Daniel Degu, as well as Marvel Ang, associate director of development for Charities Housing, and Josh Shumsky, executive director of the econic company.

Panelists in Cupertino discussed an array of topics, including the state of retail, the city’s jobs-to-housing ratio, making the city more accessible for seniors, a loss of sales tax revenue from Apple, the controversial Vallco development and plans to produce more affordable housing.

The forum, which concluded with an interactive Q&A session, took place at Cupertino Community Hall.

Live events, forums and policy discussions are part of San José Spotlight’s mission to ignite civic engagement. Our newsroom has launched an ambitious growth plan to expand its reporting to Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Milpitas, Los Gatos, Campbell and Saratoga.
