A former state assemblymember who made a bid for Congress last year has found another way to enter the national arena — by heading a political action committee supporting LGBTQ+ candidates.
Evan Low, who represented Assembly District 26 and previously served as Campbell mayor, is now president and CEO of LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, a federal PAC that supports LGBTQ+ candidates running for office across the nation. Low started the job at the beginning of March. The pivot comes months after Low lost the race for Congressional District 16 to former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and ended his decade representing Silicon Valley in the California Legislature.
“I wanted the opportunity to help others looking to run and bring change where they live just like I did,” Low told San José Spotlight. “LGBTQ+ elected officials have more power, more numbers than ever before, but we have so much more work to do to have equal representation in California and nationwide.”
LGBTQ+ Victory Fund supports candidates financially and trains them and their campaign workers. The PAC also connects candidates with other organizations within their communities or nationally.
Low said his job includes working with candidates the PAC is supporting, connecting candidates to each other and gathering support for the organization as a whole.
LGBTQ+ Victory Fund spent about $10,250 to support Low’s congressional campaign last year, according to Open Secrets. Low said he’s worked with the committee since he first ran for Campbell City Council in 2006, through his time serving in the Assembly.
“We have a long history together and that makes this new role that much more of an honor to me,” Low said.
